Open call for 2ANNAS Emerging Critics Workshop

Riga International Short Film Festival 2ANNAS Industry Days program 2ANNAS FORUM announces applications for the Emerging Critics’ Workshop! For the first time during 2ANNAS FORUM, from 7 to 11 April, 2024, three selected participants from the Baltic countries will have an opportunity to participate in a four-day intensive workshop led by established film critic and journalist Tara Karajica. 

PROGRAMME

The workshop will provide both – theory and practice; after gaining knowledge of the fundamentals of film criticism, participants will have access to the 2ANNAS Baltic competition programmes to really exercise and implement their newly developed skills. With the support of the mentor, participants will also choose one winner of the Critics' Award.

MENTOR

Tara Karajica is a Belgrade-based film programmer, critic and journalist. She is currently a Live Action Shorts   Programmer and Head of the Industry Program at PÖFF Shorts. Previously, she has also been the Narrative     Features Programmer at the Durban International Film Festival, a Narrative Features Screener for SXSW and  Head of the Short Film Program and Live Action Shorts Programmer at SEEFest. 

Her writings have appeared in Variety, Indiewire, Screen International, Little White Lies, Business Doc Europe, and Film New Europe, among many other media outlets, including the European Film Academy’s online magazine, Close-up and Eurimages. 

She is a member of the European Film Academy, the Online Film Critics Society and the Alliance of Women Film Journalists as well as the recipient of the 2014 Best Critic Award at the Altcine Action! Film Festival. 

In September 2016, she founded Yellow Bread, a magazine dedicated entirely to short films, ranked among the 25 Top Short Film Blogs and Websites on the Planet in 2017. In February 2018, she launched Fade to Her, a magazine about successful women working in Film and TV and in 2019, she was a member of the Jury of the European Shooting Stars (European Film Promotion).  Tara is a regular at film festivals as a film critic, moderator and/or jury member.

BENEFITS

Selected participants will benefit from the free festival's accreditation and their accommodation and subsistence will be covered.  There is no entry or participation fee.

REQUIREMENTS

• The workshop is aimed at everyone who is born or residates in Estonia, Lithuania or Latvia.
• One participant will be chosen from each Baltic country by the team of 2ANNAS.
• Applicants have to have a proficient English language (both spoken and written);
• Applicants must be able to cover their travel expenses to and from the Workshop.
• With the application, the applicant confirms a full participation in the workshop.
• Date of Arrival: 7 April; date of departure: 11 April;
• Applicants must have a strong motivation to learn more about film journalism and critics.
• Previous experience with short films and/or in cinema is appreciated.

SUBMISSION PROCESS

Results will be announced by the end of February. 

• Writing sample can be an analysis / interview / article and other written works;
• Writing sample must be up to 1500 words long;
• Application and workshop language is English;
