Discussion "In the Maze of Consciousness: AI - Augmenting Creativity or Diminishing Originality?"
Together with film industry professionals we will explore how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the filmmaking process. We will discuss whether AI is democratising the film industry and examine its potential as well as its limitations for practical implementation within this field.
We will also address the ethical aspects associated with the integration of AI in the creative sphere - including copyright, the risk of plagiarism, and its overall impact on the labour market. At the end of the session, the audience will have a chance to ask questions to the participants.
The discussion will be held in English and take place on Wednesday, April 10, at 16.00 at Kino Bize. Admission to the event is free of charge for anyone interested.
PARTICIPANTS
Nira Bozkurt (Germany), discussion moderator
Nira Bozkurt is an experienced screenwriter, producer, and director, working across film and series, XR, and audio fiction. She specializes in new storytelling formats and the use of creative technology and AI, bringing diverse stories to the forefront, challenging the status quo, and promoting inclusivity. Her work has been recognized with awards and nominations at numerous international festivals. Nira's expertise also extends into business development and XR consultancy, making her a sought-after speaker on XR and AI storytelling at international film festivals and a guest lecturer at the renowned Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, where she imparts knowledge on crafting interactive media and employing AI in both storytelling and production. As a member of the Association of German Screenwriters, she actively contributes to the Artificial Intelligence working group, exploring the integration of AI in storytelling and its potential to enhance creative processes.
Alina Manolache (Romania)
Alina Manolache is a filmmaker, artist, and professor, known for her work at the intersection of documentary and experimental cinema. Following her studies in fine arts, she transitioned to non-fiction filmmaking and has since directed a diverse spectrum of films e.g. "Lost Kids on the Beach," "End of Summer," "I AM HERE," and "3 Dialogues About the Future," which have been premiered at numerous festivals, such as the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam (IDFA), the International Documentary Film Festival Visions du Reel in Nyon, Switzerland, and the Copenhagen International Documentary Festival CPH:DOX, as well as at art galleries and museums.
Currently, Alina is working on her sophomore feature documentary, "A Summer of Nothing," while teaching MA Film students at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) in Switzerland.
Pablo Núñez Palma (Chile / Netherlands)
Pablo Núñez Palma is an audiovisual director whose work spans experimental cinema, graphic design, and scriptwriting. He is one of the co-founders of the documentary collective Mapa Fílmico de un País (MAFI) and the creator of Jan Bot, a computer program that uses artificial intelligence to generate large-scale found footage films. Pablo has graduated from the Catholic University of Chile and completed postgraduate studies at the University of Amsterdam and the National Film School in the Netherlands. His work has been presented at the Rotterdam Film Festival and IDFA DocLab, among others.
Niels Putman (Belgium)
Niels Putman is the artistic director of Kortfilm.be, the online hub for Belgian short films, and a co-founder and the chief editor of the short film magazine Talking Shorts. As a freelance film programmer and curator, he is currently affiliated with the Fantoche International Animation Film Festival (Switzerland), Film Fest Gent (Belgium), and the video-on-demand platform Avila (Belgium). Additionally, he has contributed as a guest curator at festivals in Quebec City, Dresden, and Poznan.
Antanas Skučas (Lithuania)
Antanas Skučas has worked in the field of animation since 2005. His debut film "Childhood Diary" was awarded a Lithuanian Film Academy Award in 2009. In 2015, he founded the film production company Tylus kinas. Alongside his creative pursuits, Antanas teaches at the Vilnius Academy of Arts and works with new media, including XR, VR, AR, and AI.
